COVID has highlighted how woefully unprepared many of our governments were when it comes to controlling a pandemic. And, with an added layer of confusing directives and changes in direction, one thing has become abundantly clear during COVID-19 – We need to work differently, and we need to plan.

Safe on-site

Following Government guidelines, the construction industry is doing everything possible to keep businesses running while keeping the workforce safe. However, with Gov guidelines followed and procedures in place, it is still obvious that not everyone feels safe to return to work. In some cases, complex sites/spaces make it impossible to implement safety guidelines, leaving no option but to abandon projects until guidelines are lifted or reviewed.
This chaotic situation continues, and with the threat of a second wave constantly reminding us that this pandemic is far from over, it is now critical to review work processes and implement improved ways of working safely.

Digital BIM

How do you keep going with changing government advice each week, one meter- two meters, mask, no mask, and localized lockdowns? Fortunately, in the construction and engineering sector the recent growth in digital services, such as BIM, terrestrial scanning, photogrammetry, 3D models, and drone services, means there are ‘’ways and means’ to improve safety onsite without added disruption.

The potential to improve safety

Using terrestrial and drone scans onsite drastically reduces your team’s exposure to airborne particles and infections. Scanning not only reduces the time spent on-site, but LIDAR technology also makes social distancing easier. By further introducing drones and droids we can access potentially hazardous sites and locations. Now is the time to reduce the effects of the pandemic on your projects by planning. Use technology solutions to drastically reduce on-site personnel’s risks and time spent on-site, with the use of drones, and scanners.

Improved delivery time

Certainly, it would be foolish to try and second guess a virus’s next move. But you can improve your ability to adapt and improve the flexibility of construction and architectural working conditions. By using 3D scans to obtain vital information on buildings, areas and objects you are provided a great opportunity to change how you work. Scans not only deliver precision detail; they bring improved efficiencies and accuracy to surveys and inspections.

Stay one step ahead

COVID has already changed the way we work, and the long-term impacts are yet to be felt. We currently do not know how our future will look, but we do know from history what happens during chaotic times. We will experience huge change and large-scale impacts on society, and innovation will increase as a result. Those that embrace change and apply innovative technology are best placed to ride the upheaval of the threatened second wave.
